Description

What does interdisciplinarity mean to me?

The concept of interdisciplinarity in research and teaching has been present in academic literature since at least the 1960s (principally, but not exclusively in America), and has grown and waned periodically during this time. It is currently experiencing something of a resurgence, at least in the sense that a number of UK universities have recently developed teaching and research programmes described as 'interdisciplinary'. However, the use and definition of this term, and the manner in which it is incorporated into such programmes varies greatly, and related terms such as multidisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and postdisciplinary may also be used.

One claim of interdisciplinarity is that it allows a more effective way to address the problems we encounter in reality compared to more traditional disciplinary approaches. The HRI Showcase series on Interdisciplinarity aims to explore different concepts, understandings, and applications of interdisciplinarity - on their own, and in relation to disciplinary approaches - for problem solving in both teaching and research. We hope, through this series, to contribute to an academic and practice-based discourse about interdisciplinarity in research and Higher Education.

In the first of several upcoming events, we ask our panel of speakers to briefly interdisciplinarity as they apply it in their own teaching practice by answering the simple question, ‘What does interdisciplinarity mean to me?’

Each speaker will present a 10-minute response to the question, and a general discussion will complete the session. See our blog for follow-up posts and further information about the series.

Refreshments will be provided.
